Clear Smog is a good tool to have for other bulky Pokemon that like to set up, such as Clefable. The status affliction aimed for here is burn instead of poison, so use Scald as much as possible with Earth Power for a stronger STAB. Earthquake is the other offensive move you’ll use to hit poinson-types and specially bulky attackers, but otherwise you use Toxic and Recover to wear your opponent down. This is an old standard for Gastrodon from way back, and the only real difference now is that he has Storm Drain and can absorb water attacks completely and get a special attack boost from it for Surf. Gastrodon isn’t OU anymore in 6th gen, but it still acts as a good water/electric absorbing Pokemon and has some good type advantages and resistances overall. Body Slam gives Lapras good coverage and has a decent chance to paralyze your opponent, which may allow for more substitutes, or annoyance of your opponent with Waterfall’s Flinch rate and Paralysis’s tendency to stop moves in their tracks. This gives you opportunities to Dragon Dance, and then attack with Waterfall. Also, I shall mention that the move has one of the highest freeze chances in the game.ġ36 HP EVs will allow Lapras to lay down Substitute that have exactly 101 HP, a Seismic Toss to be effectively blocked.
Freeze-Dry severely damages Water Types who try to switch in to Lapras, especially if your opponent thinks they can switch into a water or ice move with a strong NU water type. This is my favorite Lapras set for NU, Frost Breath will cause some major damage between the Specs, same type attack bonus (STAB) and of course its abilty to critical hit every time. Lapras has a good movepool as well as a STAB Frost Breath which is quite deadly. Lapras is an NU pokemon which I have used to very good success within that tier.
